Concha Cabana

Open the door to Key West’s past when you arrive at Concha Cabana, a quaint, 1923 “shotgun” house with a brand-new guesthouse just a stone’s throw from where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Located in a convenient spot in historic Old Town, this two bedroom/two bath house is between the Southernmost Point and the Ernest Hemingway house. Near the corner where Whitehead Street meets Catherine Street, it’s only a block-and-a-half from Duval Street and walking distance to the island’s famous lighthouse.

Completely restored, updated and uniquely furnished, your hosts have missed no detail inside or out. You’ll find a cozy, turn-key-ready home away from home with everything you need for day-to-day relaxation.

Behind the white picket fence is a beautifully tiled sidewalk and steps leading to a breezy, cheery front porch where you can sit and watch the locals and visitors pass by on foot or bicycles.

Furnished in vintage rattan seating and accents with a tropical motif, the living room has a warm wood floor and is sunlit by five large window. Original art by Key West artists Martha dePoo, Sean Patrick Callahan and Abigail White hangs on the walls.

The modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances faces the living room with its wide bar, perfect for entertaining. The countertops are a striking earth-tone granite with real wood cabinetry offering plenty of storage.

Dine at the vintage dinette under a rattan swag light. The convenient built-in desk is the perfect place to surf the internet or correspond with friends and family “off the rock” of Key West.

The nostalgic bathroom has an onyx tile interior and tropical décor, including a shower curtain with a vintage cigar label motif, a historical nod to Key West’s early days. There is plenty of convenient storage in the well-stocked linen closet full of fluffy colorful towels and in built-in drawers outside the bathroom door in the hallway to the bedroom. Original art can be found here, too, including ‘Key West Gothic’ by Key West artist William Welch.

The large bedroom in the main house will make its guests feel right at home in the vintage full-size blonde Heywood Wakefield Sculptura bed with a Sealy mattress and box springs. The spacious closet, unusual in Old Town homes, provides ample storage space for clothes, shoes, and more. A vintage blonde high-boy dresser by designer Russell Wright provides even more space for storage. Blinds in the bedroom (and living room) provide your choice of sunlight or privacy.

Concha Cabana sleeps one to four guests (with a four-guest maximum) and the property is a smoke-free environment.

Step through the back door onto a wide and shady back porch to read, nap or just listen to the sounds of the neighborhood where wild chickens and roosters from days-of-old cockfighting rings still roam. The entire property has a privacy fence and is pet-friendly. Small dogs are allowed with prior approval.

The porch overlooks a colorful combination Jacuzzi/cocktail pool with waterfall and LED multi-color lighting. A wood deck includes patio table for four with umbrella that adds to the comfy wicker settee and rockers on the back porch. A large trunk in which to store cushions in the event of rain is provided as well.

The deck connects the main house to a newly-built guest cottage (2013) with a queen-size sofa-sleeper. The bright room features clerestory windows and original art by Al Black, one of the original Florida Highwaymen artists and by local Key West artist David Scott Meier. The cottage includes a half-bath and a laundry room with a full-size washer and dryer. Even the half-bath features original art by Key west watercolorist Kevin Peterson. A closet provides space not only for hanging clothes, but for a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker so that guests don’t have to go to the main kitchen to make a cup of tea or coffee or to warm up leftovers from one of Key West’s many outstanding restaurants.

A stunning outdoor shower – much sought-after in key West – provides luxury and privacy with its tall enclosure, four stainless steel clothes hooks, and a soap/conditioner/lotion dispenser. Best of all, a 12′ square rain showerhead uses blue LED lighting with cold water and red lighting as the water turns warm.

The property has been professionally landscaped with native plant varieties and has landscape lighting to accent plantings as well as illuminate the convenient walk of stepping stones from front to back. The deck is partially sunny and partially shaded by a neighboring Tamarind tree, purported to be the largest one in North America. There’s plenty of privacy for sunning.

Only three houses away – and visible from the kitchen window – is a community center with a huge public swimming pool and a deck that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. With a lovely park next door to it, the view at this free amenity is a local secret. It’s ideal for anyone who loves to swim laps. You can also make a daily short bike ride to the gorgeous, tree-lined beaches of historic Ft. Zachary Taylor or nearby South Beach.

You’ll feel like a real “Conch” staying at Concha Cabana. Come see for yourself.
